Beneficiaries: Physicians, healthcare practitioners, medical associations, policymakers, public health institutions, and the Indian population
The Capacity Building Initiative for Sodium Reduction in India aims to strengthen the role of healthcare professionals in addressing one of the country's most significant public health challenges, excessive dietary sodium consumption. High sodium intake is a leading modifiable risk factor for hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and kidney disorders, contributing substantially to India's growing burden of non-communicable diseases.
Implemented by IPE Global – Centre for Knowledge & Development (IPE-CKD) with support from Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) and in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the initiative focuses on equipping physicians with the knowledge and practical tools required to counsel patients on sodium reduction and the appropriate use of low-sodium salt substitutes (LSS). Through a comprehensive technical learning module, expert-led engagements, and national dissemination efforts, the programme seeks to integrate evidence-based sodium reduction practices into routine clinical care.
Beyond strengthening physician capacity, the initiative promotes multi-stakeholder collaboration to advance healthier dietary practices, improve public awareness, and support national efforts to reduce the burden of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. By positioning healthcare professionals as key advocates for preventive health, the initiative contributes to long-term improvements in population health outcomes while reinforcing India's commitment to evidence-based non-communicable disease prevention.
